A BACP Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist in Birmingham
My formal education was in Business Management with a specialisation in the field of Human Resources Management (HRM) in which I hold an M.Sc. I experienced working in office environments as impersonal and unfulfilling, subsequently becoming increasingly aware of needing to change my profession. I wanted more direct contact with people and decided to train as a counsellor myself, having previously experienced Gestalt therapy and its immense support from a client’s perspective.
Training as a Gestalt Therapist
I started training as a counsellor in my mid 20s. Having completed a Certificate followed by a Diploma in Counselling, I then embarked on training as a Psychotherapist at the York Psychotherapy Training Centre (the completion of which leads to a UKCP registration and GPTI accreditation). I have now completed the core (taught) component of the training and am in the process of writing my dissertation.
I am very enthusiastic and committed to my professional development.
I have attended several additional workshops, some which are listed below:
- Survivors of abuse
- Relational Living Body Psychotherapy
- Voice and Movement
- Gestalt approach to Eating Disorders
My particular interest as a Gestalt therapist, and in a wider sense, is embodiment (i.e. how one experiences himself/herself in his/her body). I am a graduate of the Developmental Somatic Psychotherapy 2013 – 2015 Training Programme led by Ruella Frank, a leading trainer in this field, at the Center for Somatic Studies in New York.
I have also completed three series of workshops, each consisting of three training modules ‘Developing Embodied interventions and experiments within the co-created embodied field’ with Julianne Appel-Opper in Berlin. Julianne is world renowned in the field of embodied Gestalt Psychotherapy.
I have worked for the NHS, both in Primary and Secondary Care, and more latterly in outpatient and inpatient settings. I have extensive experience from within the NHS and my private practice in the following areas:
- personality disorders
- attachment issues
- relationship difficulties
- loss and bereavement
- eating disorders
I have also worked as a Counselling Assessor for a large voluntary agency. Being the first point of contact I assessed the new clients’ needs and assigned them to counsellors as appropriate.
My last counselling post within an organisation was for a University as a Student Counsellor, offering individual and group therapy sessions. I am currently a full-time Gestalt Therapist and Supervisor in my private practice.
